Task
The existing director’s table was screaming 1990s. Ergonomically it was right, yet the looks were offending. The idea was to keep the good ergonomics and add value by choosing a new desk material and the technology of adjustable work desk height.
Solution
The design of the new Director’s table and the mobile office table was influenced by the existing desk. At several sawmills I searched the right shape of the tree trunk, wide enough to accommodate the boomerang shape of the main desk. Finally, an ideal sample was located at Torapo, a lumber dealer near Prague – a poplar. This poplar has the advantage of a beautiful honey color and grain texture and with the cloudy shapes of root texture.
The wood board was sent to LUGI, a wood furniture manufacturer on the bank of the Vltava river. There, the “boomerang” shape was drawn from different sides of the board until arriving at the ideal orientation with a minimal waste created. A CNC machine then cut out the shape of the table. A 6 1⁄2” thick board was then run through the wood planer, arriving with a 6” even board. A hole was bored at the root protrusion to provide a passage for the computer and phone cables. Layers of oil and beeswax were then applied to the surface.
